STEWARDS OF THE EARTH: A SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP

At Malagassi we don’t believe that we inherited the planet from our ancestors, but that we are borrowing it from our children. We believe that essential oils represent nature’s most precious gift, capable of inspiring the senses, sparking emotion and encouraging wellbeing.

This reverence for earth and nature animates our efforts to be as sustainable as possible in all of our practices. Through sustainable cultivation and natural distillation methods, Malagassi benefits the planet, our clients and the farming communities with whom we partner.

WE TAKE SPECIAL CARE.

Many of our plants start life in a nursery, where they receive the care and attention they need to reach full maturity. Once the plants reach a sufficient size we transplant them in our fields, where they can continue to grow in rich soil and perfect conditions.

Planting more trees is essential to combating the effects of climate change. Malagassi actively contributes to the reforestation of Madagascar by planting more than 50,000 trees of various species each year.

  • In an effort to preserve and restore Madagascar’s Cinnamon forests, Malagassi has planted more than 10,000 new trees. These trees produce new seeds that are scattered by birds and the wind, giving birth to thousands more trees.

WE TAKE OUR CUES FROM NATURE.

By diversifying the plants in our soil – following the way of natural ecosystems – we make it richer and more fertile. The results are incredible: more robust plants that produce stronger aromas thanks to a balanced ecosystem.

WE PRESERVE WATER WHENEVER POSSIBLE.

As water becomes an increasingly rare commodity in some parts of the world, we as essential oil producers are particularly mindful of how much water we use. Our preservation activities include collecting water in dams during Madagascar’s rainy season and, in regions where water is least accessible, using closed circuit hydrodistillation whenever possible.

WE ADAPT AND INNOVATE.

At Malagassi, we are constantly innovating to improve our processes, conserve resources and generate energy. We use green charcoal that we make ourselves to power our distilleries in an efficient way, reducing the need to cut down trees and promoting a circular economy.

As many of our crops are situated in remote locations that can be difficult to access, we have built many small distilleries within walkable distance of all of our fields, which allows us to optimize transport, save time and reduce our need for vehicles and gasoline.
